MT-1, also known as Melanotan 1 and by its generic name afamelanotide, is a linear 13 amino acid analog of alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH). Two substitutions, norleucine at position 4 and D-phenylalanine at position 7, make MT-1 far more stable and potent than native alpha-MSH. It acts mainly at the melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R) on melanocytes.

MT-1 is the more selective cousin of MT-2. Where MT-2 is a cyclic peptide that reaches several melanocortin receptors, MT-1 stays focused on MC1R, which makes it the cleaner tool for studying pigmentation pathways on their own.
